Lilian | Embroiderer

Born in 1964
Originally from Zuleta, Ecuador, where her home- studio is located in the Andes Mountains.

In the northern highlands of Ecuador, not far from Cayambe, lies the small village of Zuleta — a place where embroidery is more than tradition; it’s identity. This is where we met Erika and her mother Lilian, who has dedicated over 40 years to the art of Zuleta embroidery.

Passed down from her grandmother and aunts, Lilian’s technique was refined through workshops held decades ago by visiting nuns who helped shape the embroidery style that now defines the region. Today, she leads a collective of 25 women who embroider by hand with care and purpose.Inspired by nature — especially the vibrant flowers and roses that grow across the land — their work reflects the beauty of the territory.

Their creations range from shirts and blouses to delicate table linens and embroidered accessories. Each piece is carefully crafted, echoing generations of knowledge and pride. The embroidery of Zuleta is unmistakable: intricate, refined, and deeply connected to the spirit of the land.
