Angelica Marotta | Wicker weave

Born in 1991,
Originally from San Salvatore Telesino (BN),
her studio is base in Milan.

A beautiful story of passions and traditions handed down from one generation to another, together with Angelica we retraced the places of her childhood, the green hills of the upper Caserta area where, thanks to her grandfather, she learned the secrets of the weaving technique.

«My grandfather was my teacher. I couldn't help but watch him weave the willows. His hands, so big and rough, but so painstaking. His every gesture was perfect. When I decided I wanted to learn this tradition, his directions were very specific. He weaved and I observed, each step was introduced by a short phrase in dialect while he prepared the uprights of a basket.»

«In the morning, as soon as the sun began to illuminate the fields, we had to harvest the willows, reeds and elms. By lunchtime we had finished cleaning them and dividing them by size. Whoever came to the house could observe, but did not have to speak to us. We closed ourselves in that basket production that bonded us so much.I am the only one in the family who decided to learn my grandfather's art and carry it forward, out of respect for tradition, for the craftsmanship that characterizes my land, out of respect for an art that must not be lost.»

«Now that my grandfather is no longer here, I weave with his phrases that follow one another in my mind.»

«Nature is my belief, I respect it, I live it, I let myself be guided and inspired by walking through the fields, woods and hills of Squille, my family's town»
